You can take a free ferry to two different locations north of Amsterdam. I guess it is free since the areas aren't served by metros at this point. There are two ferries-- one is a short journey to IJPlein, which we took, and the other is a longer journey to the "NDSM."
The ferries let bikes and everything go on.They are free and come and go every 10 minutes or so.
Once you get off the ferry you can take a walk around the northern Amsterdam suburb. It's quite quaint.
These are the sort of standard little brick Dutch homes. Quite lovely!
