My wife, the illustrious Baobei Funky Feng and I recently made a trip to Stockholm to visit some friends. As part of my series, Sauce's Super Svenska Guide to Sweden - Skol!, I present, the Gamla Stan.
The charming old town of Stockholm, or Gamla Staden (Stan) is a quaint series of small streets on a central island of Stockholm. The island is connected by bridges and can be easily reach via metro or simply walking through pedestrian-friendly Stockholm (bike friendly too, by the way!). In the Gamla Stan you will find pleasant, small streets with beautiful buildings:
Also some larger streets and plazas:
A King George and the Dragon Statue:
Many beautiful winding streets, free from the massive amounts of tourists you see in the rest of Europe:
The rear of the Stockholm Cathedral:
Inside the Stockholm Cathedral:
Another King George and the Dragon, by Bernt Notke:
The church, Storkyrkan, in Swedish, literally means "Great Church."
It has some nice old alters:
Though originally a Roman Catholic church, it became a Lutheran one in 1576, during the reformation.
The Swedish royalty often gets married there.
They eat fermented fish beneath King George and the Dragon.
The horse finds Lutfisk tasty, and is drooling.
There is a tomb of the Unknown Norwegian:
He was said to have been the inventor of Surstromming, a tasty Swedish treat:
It's quite large, and holds a lot of people for Scandinavian death metal shows:
People often sing Martin Luther's songs adapted for death metal:
Here you can see an alter describing how Vikings once pillaged a Synagogue:
Ships are important symbols to Scandinavians:
Here's a nice candle globe:And pretty vaulted ceilings:
Warm, relaxing, and they say if you're there to pray, it's free!
Around the corner you can see the Royal Palace.
Don't worry, it's Sweden so that gun is only a flat-pack decorative.
Just like this cannon:
The Swedish National Penis is uncircumcised:
The Gamla Stan is quite beautiful:
Especially at night:
Quaint, welcoming streets for you to get lost in:
Well I hope you enjoyed!
